Choosing between a private charter and a scheduled commercial flight in Costa Rica isn’t only about price—it’s about time, control, and where you can actually land. Short runways, peninsulas split by ferries, and winding mountain roads can turn a “quick transfer” into most of your day. Charter puts the timing and the map back in your hands so you arrive where your plans begin, not where the road starts.
Prefer a scheduled seat? Great—we’ll advise honestly. Our sister airline, Costa Rica Green Airways (CRGA), flies popular domestic routes so you can choose the smartest option for your trip. Explore routes here: Costa Rica Green Airways Destinations.
If you’d like help matching seats and gear to the right cabin, start here: CarmonAir Fleet. Flying through San José? We use the private terminal at SJO for a calm handoff: GAT-SJO General Aviation Terminal.

The real question: door to destination (not airport to airport)
Flight times look similar on paper. The difference appears when you add what surrounds the flight.
- Charter: you pick wheels-up; we align arrival with hotel check-in, boat departures, spa times, or a sunset dinner. You use private terminals or small regional strips and land closest to your villa, lodge, marina, or beach.
- Scheduled: fixed timetables and a set network. When times line up, perfect. When they don’t, you build your day around the schedule—and often add a longer road or boat segment on arrival.
When a private charter is the better tool
You want your day back
A 25–45 minute hop replaces a 4–7 hour road/ferry combo. Same country, different day.
You need precision timing
Families with nap windows, wedding welcome dinners, anglers chasing a 5:30 a.m. dock call, retreat cohorts timing a session—charter leaves when it serves your plan.
You care where you land
Small airstrips like Quepos (Manuel Antonio), Drake Bay, Puerto Jiménez, Golfito, Tambor, Nosara, Carrillo/Sámara, Tamarindo, and Arenal/La Fortuna put you near what you came to do. For North Santa Teresa/Playa Hermosa, we can also use our private Manzanillo runway to cut ground time.
You’re a group (cost per traveler matters)
A full Caravan/Kodiak/Islander or a 7-seat King Air priced as a whole aircraft often compares well to multiple scheduled seats + baggage fees + private ground.
You’re bringing real gear
Surfboards, rod tubes, Pelican cases, strollers, Pack ’n Plays, and pets are routine for us. Tell us sizes/weights and we’ll plan the loading order so the right items are first off.
You value safety culture and maintenance transparency
You can ask us about our operating standards, instrument capabilities, alternates, and in-house maintenance—before you book.
When a scheduled flight can make sense
Sometimes a scheduled seat is perfectly fine: solo travelers with light bags, routes that land reasonably close to your stay, and flexible timing. If that’s you, we’ll route you with Costa Rica Green Airways so you stay within the same service mindset and we can coordinate an easy handoff if you later add a charter leg.
Case studies (picture the day)
San José → North Santa Teresa
- Commercial reality: SJO → Tambor, then 60–90 minutes by road to the northern beaches.
- Charter reality: SJO → Manzanillo (private), 10–15 minutes to Playa Hermosa/North Santa Teresa. Boards and strollers go straight from aircraft to vehicle. Afternoon in the water.
San José → Manuel Antonio (Quepos)
- Commercial reality: Fixed times may force long waits at SJO or a rush on arrival.
- Charter reality: Wheels-up timed to your hotel check-in or a Marina Pez Vela departure. Park walk at golden hour instead of a terminal bench.
Liberia → Papagayo / Flamingo / Las Catalinas
- Commercial reality: Mixed schedules and multiple handoffs add friction.
- Charter reality: Land at LIR, then a short private hop (if needed) or direct ground. We aim your arrival to the exact check-in window.
Central Pacific → Osa (deep south)
- Commercial reality: Fewer schedules mean compromises.
- Charter reality: Quepos → Drake Bay/Puerto Jiménez/Golfito on your clock. Bags to lodge boats without drama.
Baggage, boards, and special handling (quick guide)
- Plan for soft duffels. They flex and protect interiors.
- Baseline allowance: about 40 lb (18 kg) checked + 10 lb (4.5 kg) hand per traveler; tell us if you’re carrying bulky items.
- Surfboards: up to ~7 ft typically ride inside on Caravan/Kodiak/Islander; longer boards may require a different loading plan or aircraft.
- Rod tubes, soft coolers, Pelican cases, drones, tripods: welcome—share dimensions; lithium batteries in hand carry.
- Families: compact stroller, car seats, Pack ’n Play—pre-staged so they’re first off.
- Mobility aids and meds: send folded dimensions/weights; we can manage refrigeration and careful handling.
- Pets: yes, with notice and current health certificates.
VIP meet-and-assist at SJO (what it feels like)
We meet you after immigration, escort you to the private terminal, and check you in in about 15 minutes at GAT-SJO. No long lines, no gate sprints. On arrival, we offload directly into your vehicle—boards, rods, strollers, camera kits—so you roll out quickly. Special requests (cold-chain meds, fragile items, birthday surprises) are easiest with 24–48 hours’ notice.
Safety, weather, and alternates
Green season favors morning flights for soft air and clear views. Some grass strips are daylight/VFR-only; if a shower turns a field slick, we’ll move to a paved alternate and handle the short ground leg so you still arrive on time.
What about cost?
With charter, you’re buying the aircraft—not a seat. The sweet spot is families, friend groups, retreats, wedding parties, and fishing crews where the per-person math compares well against multiple scheduled tickets, luggage fees, and private transfers. Tell us your passenger count and gear, and we’ll price the most efficient aircraft and routing.
Quick decision guide
- Tight timing, gear, kids or pets, boutique or remote stays? Charter.
- Solo traveler, light luggage, flexible day, destination near a main strip? Scheduled can work—book with our sister airline, Costa Rica Green Airways.
- Mixing north and south in one week? Arrive one hub and depart the other (LIR/SJO) to avoid backtracking.
FAQs:
How early do we arrive for a charter?
At SJO’s private terminal, plan about 15 minutes. Regionals are even faster.
Can you coordinate villa check-ins, boats, or spa times?
Yes. We set wheels-up to your plan, not the other way around.
What happens if weather changes?
We brief alternates before departure, favor mornings in green season, and reroute to a suitable paved strip if a grass field is wet—then handle the last mile.
Which aircraft is right for us?
We’ll recommend the best fit based on runway, payload, and comfort. Browse options here: CarmonAir Fleet.
Do you also offer scheduled flights?
Yes—via our sister airline, Costa Rica Green Airways. See routes and schedules: CRGA Destinations.
Ready to choose the smarter way?
Tell us your dates, passenger count, and luggage/gear. We’ll compare charter vs. scheduled for your exact plan, recommend the best option, and align the details so your first afternoon is the reason you came—not a transfer day.
